On-foot explorations near Corfu Holiday Palace

The peninsula of Kanoni, the home of Corfu Holiday Palace, is one of the most famous places in Corfu. The area was named after the canon that the French installed, which still lies at the center of the square. Starting from your room at Corfu Holiday Palace, you will easily explore the treasures of Corfiot nature, and plan your visits to nearby archaeological sites and attractions.

As soon as you arrive at Corfu Holiday Palace, the breathtaking view of the Ionian Sea and the picturesque Pontikonisi, which means “Mouse Island”, will undoubtedly leave you speechless. Pontikonisi is the trademark of Corfu, named after its tiny size, and a visit by boat is an experience you should not miss. On the islet you will find the quaint Chapel of Pantokrator, which dates back to the 11th century.

Across the hotel, an elevated strip of land connects the shore with the historic Monastery of Vlacherna, which is an attraction for thousands of visitors every year. At the same spot, the Chalikiopoulou Lake, a wetland of great ecological value, completes the natural beauty of the landscape. It is notable that the lake was once the ancient Hyllaikos port Corfu, and excavations in the area confirmed significant commercial activity.

Exploring the area around Corfu Holiday Palace, you will discover significant monuments of the Archaic, Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods. Walk around the Old town of Corfu (Palaiopoli), to admire the Old Christian Basilica, one of the most significant monuments of the island, built right in the heart of the ancient market, where the Roman baths are located as well. A few meters away, you will find the impressive ancient temple dedicated to the Greek Goddess Artemis and the elaborate gable of Gorgo, which is displayed at the Archaeological Museum.

Another sight of the area that will draw your attention is the Mon Repos Palace, lying opposite the ruins of Palaiopoli. It was built in 1830 by the British Commissioner, Sir Frederick Adam. After the union of Corfu with Greece, in 1864, Mon Repos passed into the hands of the former Greek royal family, who turned it into their summer residence. Prince Philip of the United Kingdom and Duke of Edinburgh was born here in 1921. Today, Mon Repos has been transformed into a museum that is surrounded by a large park, where you may combine sightseeing with a leisurely stroll under the shades of the trees.
