Kanoni, Corfu, is the area of the island which has been photographed the most, as it is one of the must-see places. It is situated on a beautiful, panoramic location, lush with vegetation and featuring dream-like beaches, only 4km from the town center and with regular bus connection to the town throughout the day, from 9 am till 9 pm.
For the record, we mention that the area was named after the canon (Kanoni=canon) which was installed there by the French in 1798 and which is still found today at the same spot; the legendary Canon is dominant over the small square.
Kanoni offers an imposing and magical view to the famous Monastery of Mary of Vlachernes, built in the 17th century, which is connected to an elevated strip of land leading to Perama, an area ideal for a nice walk, while in the background, at the entrance of the “Chalikiopoulou” lagoon, the dominant feature is the legendary and well-known lush island, “Pontikonissi”, that is a landmark of Corfu and owes its name to its tiny size (Pontikonissi=Mouse Island).
On the little island, you can find the Monastery of Pantokrator, which according to Homer was Odysseus’ ship, turned into stone by the god Poseidon during the storm which washed the legendary castaway up on the island of the Pheaecians, his last station before his return to Ithaca. The Byzantine church of the 11th or 12th century, which is hidden inside a dense grove of pine trees and firs is the only building of the island and a frequent destination for worshipers. Next to the Monastery of Mary of Vlachernes, you can find the boats that perform many and regular cruises to Pontikonissi.
The Chalikiopoulou Lagoon still constitutes an important wetland which hosts rare kinds of migratory birds. During bird migratory months a considerable number of rare birds, such as the Great White Egret (Egretta alba), a kind under extinction, can be observed there. Inside the 2.000.000 km2 of the lagoon, organized fish farming is performed, which covers the largest part of fish needs of the island.
In the Kanoni area, Corfu, where Corfu Holiday Palace hotel is built, there are also the ancient town of Corfu, established in the 8th century A.D., the ancient temple of Diana (Artemis), the monument of Menekratis and the Tower of Nerantzicha. Read more Close
